National Poison Prevention Week
When poison happens, Poison Centers are ready 24/7/365 with fast, free treatment advice by calling Poison Help
(1-800-222-1222) or visiting https://www.copoisoncenter.org/ or www.poisonhelp.org
Whether it’s a question or an emergency, Poison Help can provide life-saving information when people need it most and calling a Poison Center is faster and more accurate than an internet search.
More than 2 million poisonings are reported each year to the Nation’s poison control centers. On average, 90% of these poisonings happen in American homes each year, and more than 70% of people who call Poison Help get the help they need right where they are saving the cost of a trip to a doctor or hospital.
National Poison Prevention Week (NPPW) is soon upon us! What is NPPW?
This year National Poison Prevention Week (NPPW) is March 19-25, 2023.
NPPW is a week dedicated to raising awareness about poison control centers and the Poison Help Hotline available to everyone (1-800-222-1222).
History: In 1961, Congress established National Poison Prevention Week to raise awareness, reduce unintentional poisonings, and promote poison prevention. It is sponsored by the National Poison Prevention Week Council. Each year, the Council holds a children's artwork contest to raise awareness about poisons.
The Rocky Mountain Poison Center hopes that by recognizing this event, it will bring people together in commemoration of National Poison Prevention Week, to ultimately mitigate the number of people who are involved in poisonings and toxin-related health emergencies each year.
What happens at Rocky Mountain Poison Center during NPPW?
• School presentations by nurses, doctors, and pharmacists on poison prevention.
• Educational outreach to raise awareness about poisons.
• Poison centers all across the country conduct activities at a local level to raise awareness of the dangers of poisoning in their regions.
• The National Poison Prevention Week Council holds a children's artwork contest to raise awareness about poisons for K-4th graders, and a video contest with a $1000 prize, for kids 5th-12th grade!
